BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Roseline A. Okendo Biography
I was born in Nakuru, Kenya and worked in Thika, Kenya at Macadamia Nut Project for 8 years and moved to USA in 1996. I graduated from Radford University, Virginia, USA with a BSN in Nursing and Minor in Business Management 2002. I have been practicing nursing for 18 years.
The essence of nursing is caring. I grew up in a community where people helped each other. My parents were involved in the community in Kenya. My parents laid the healthy nyanza and instilled in me the importance of giving back to the community where you live. Witnessing individual acts of kindness towards humanity motivated me to volunteer and give back to American and Kenyan communities. Since disease is a constant threat to our life and education regarding disease prevention and health promotion can help achieve positive outcomes.
As the founder of Healthy Nyanza, a 501 c3, officially registered in February 2021, I identified a need for health education among adults and youth during 2019 and 2020 medical mission trips to Kenya. With the assistance of Healthy Nyanza volunteers, I conducted medical mission trips to three counties: Kisumu, Siaya and Homabay.
Through our Healthy Nyanza Initiative, we educated and discussed chronic diseases (stroke, heart attack and diabetes), mental health, importance of volunteering, and self-food sustainability. From November 2020 to January 2021, our latest project initiated the Fund Drive and partnered with Healthy Nyanza volunteers to help returning primary and secondary school students in Kenya. Our project provided Covid-19 education and education materials for 53 schools and 4 churches.
Leveraging experiences from my past, I developed ways to impact people’s lives on both a local and international level to ensure a brighter future for generations to come. I have volunteered in community programs in America and Kenya. Additionally, I was awarded the Diversity award at Radford University, Magis award for Excellence in Care at Loyola Medical Center, and Hospitality Award by the Kenyan Women group (Chicago Illinois). Am a member of the American Nurses Associati0n and Illinois Nurses Association.
I am committed to be a lifelong learner and to serve my American and Kenyan Community regardless of their social economic status.
